I’m Ryan, and this is the story behind Sili-Seedlings. 

I started this company in a student dorm in 2017 at UC Irvine. My wife and I had a small garden plot in the university garden, and one day while watering our tomato seedlings, I noticed every plot around us (including ours) was using plastic seed trays. There were broken bits of black plastic everywhere, not to mention a trash bin filled with broken trays. Yuck!

I thought to myself, surely there must be better quality, reusable options out there. Except there weren’t… Every company was selling the same cheap, black plastic that was littering our gardens and our planet. It was disappointing, but also gave me an idea.

At the same time, I noticed our kitchen was filled with silicone utensils: spatulas, hand mitts, bowls, baking mats, etc. Silicone had all the properties I was looking for in a seed tray – flexible, heat resistant, non-toxic, and durable.

…A silicone seed tray? Could it work?

I spent the next five days drawing what is today our flagship 6-cell seed tray. Soon after, I quit my university job and was delivering silicone seed trays to curious gardeners around the world.

Sili-Seedlings has grown considerably since its beginnings, but our core value has remained the same: producing plastic-free, innovative products that are a joy to use.
